The Name of the Wind & Storyteller Cabernet Sauvignon
I've been getting questions about how I read all these books- I should probably clear up that many of my pairings are with books I've read throughout the past 29 years, not 8 months. :) A few are ones I recently finished and immediately want to share, but others, like The Name of the Wind, which is a cool 722 pages long, are treasures from the past.
The Pairing
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and Storyteller Cabernet Sauvignon
Arguably my favorite fantasy novel/series (give us the third book, Patrick), The Kingkiller Chronicles also contains my favorite book style: storyteller. Just like Wuthering Heights or some of the Redwall books, there is an intro about the person who is telling the tale, then everyone settles in (bonus if they are around a crackling fire), and then the story within the story begins. I love it love it love it.
This series is about Kvothe, told by himself as an older man. Turns out he's a next-level baller who has seen and done some crazy, occasionally magical, stuff. You've got a love story, you've got swordplay, you've got music, you've even got a dragon... all the pieces of Really Good Fantasy Book.
I keep accidentally typing "The Name of the Wine," which I have decided is either a funny accident or a sign that I'm spending too much of my life typing the word "wine."
Anyways, it is beautiful and perfect outside, so it's time for me to shut down the computer and crack open another book and bottle. Until next week!

To pretend you're there hearing the story from Kvothe himself, light up this Olde Tavern scented candle. In a "you'll understand once you've read it" move, I suggest this super cool silver pipes necklace.

Of the Storyteller wines, I felt like the Cabernet Sauvignon was going to go best with The Name of the Wind. It's earthy- that quality that you don't know exactly what it means, but can't find a better term. To me, though, it tastes like wine did long ago after being aged in old old barrels and served in dark, smoky taverns. Plus, Kvothe is strong, talented, serious, dark, and deeply emotional, which just isn't Chardonnay material, you know?
Further, these wines come with little subtitles. This Cabernet is "Got Away." (The Chardonnay is "Summer Camp" and the Red Blend is "Ever After," etc.) I don't want to spoil too much about the previously mentioned love story, but let's just say... "Ever After" was a less appropriate wine choice.
