Camino Island & Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc

The Students are Coming.

In anticipation, I managed to sneak in my only weekend beach trip of the year just in time- complete with friends, mini golf, Disney trivia, and lots and lots of wine.

When I began this project, one of the easiest pairings I imagined was the beach pairing. I wanted a page turner in one hand, a crisp white wine in the other, the sound of waves, and two feet buried in sand. This weekend I got to check off the whole list and it was everything I needed.

The Pairing

Camino Island by John Grisham and Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc

The book choice was easy: much of it takes place at the beach, it's largely about people who LOVE books or write books or nonstop read books or steal books, and there are a bunch of references to UNC-CH and it's campus, which is where I attended both undergrad and grad school. (The university was first mentioned on page 59... coincidence? Or did Grisham predict my brilliance and plant that egg on purpose? We may never know.) For my fellow Heels- Mercer takes a lunch at Spanky's. RIP </3.

John Grisham is a master of the page-turner. Nothing is overly wordy, but scenes are clearly depicted so you feel immersed in his story. Characters aren't too typecast or obvious, they just seem like people you might come across in your own life. Plus, the plot is addicting and paced so you don't start to feel like you're losing steam.

The wine choice was easy, too: there are plenty of wines out there with nautical themes, but this one in particular stands out to me as beachy. There is an oceanic/salty smell to it, but the taste of it is just refreshing and fruity, perfect for the hot midday sun or a breezy lazy evening.

Clifford Bay notes that this wine comes with "flavours of grapefruit and passionfruit" which made me realize that I don't actually eat passionfruit nor know what it tastes like. Then I realized I must like it since many wines claim to taste like passionfruit. I am also the type of person who will not logically follow through on purchasing and consuming a passionfruit, I'll just ponder it from afar until someone around me does the legwork. The POINT is... this wine is really tasty.

For my fellow educators: I hope you were able to get your time in this summer to relax and unwind. We have one short week before our sweet, angelic teenagers see just how much they can push us before we break. This year, when I close my eyes and ask for mercy, I will try to bring myself back to how I felt with my toes in the sand.

If you don't have the time, or the energy, or the money to get to the beach, you can always grab this pairing for your own beach getaway wherever you are. Mercer, our beloved UNC-CH professor, returns to an old family beach cottage, so you should go with her via candle (it evens contains a hint of morning coffee, which Mercer and I both thoroughly enjoy). I've also included a funky and adorable map of campus to help you get your bearings for that one chapter.
