Cloud Atlas & Prophecy Pinot Grigio
After showcasing a sparkling wine and two reds, I figured it was time to bring in the first white wine of PageFiftyNine! The moment I saw this Pinot Grigio, I thought of Cloud Atlas, and when I tasted it I knew it would be perfect.
The Pairing
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell and Prophecy Pinot Grigio
You may have seen the movie based on Cloud Atlas, which was a great adaptation. But, like most movie adaptations, it leaves out SO much, including the basic structure of the novel (story within a story within a story within a story within a story... within a story). It's a long, sturdy book, but it's worth the time and effort to read.*
Bon Voyage!

There are countless poignant settings in this book, but the central story is depicted as a fireside story. Therefore, you can enjoy this campfire candle throughout. And, of course, don't forget your cloud atlas. (This 1987 PDF version is free. If you're curious, there is a lot to discover if you ever decide to spend an afternoon sifting through the history of cloud atlases. Spoiler alert: the cloud atlas world was rocked by the introduction of 12 new cloud types in 2017.)

This Prophecy Pinot Grigio is described as "Light citrus, tropical fruits, and mineral flavors." Before becoming a more avid wine drinker, I would read things like 'mineral flavors' and basically just ignore it. But it's important to take note of- for example, this Pinot Grigio comes with what I'll describe as a lightly salty flavor. It's not a bad flavor, but it does make you pause and think for a second, just like Cloud Atlas.
However, the main reason I paired these two together is not the pause within, but the linger after the fact. The wine has an acidity that sort of stays in your mouth long after the sweetness has passed. Likewise, this novel is one that I found myself thinking about days after I'd finished reading it. If you've been looking for that experience, grab these two and settle in!
Bon Voyage!

*That being said, I am NOT opposed to a wine and movie-adaptation-of-book pairing. You should read the book, but you should also do whatever you want to do.
