Packing for Mars & 7 Moons Red Blend

Welcome back to PageFiftyNine! This week I took a sharp left turn from The Great Gatsby and sparkling wine- featured instead are the first non-fiction book and the first red wine.

I love Mary Roach, the author of Packing for Mars (as well as Stiff, Spook, and Bonk). I was recently gifted this space novel for Christmas and immediately devoured it. Mary’s writing is thorough and factual, but also light and extremely funny. Thank my lucky stars (get it?) that I have the perfect celestial wine. This pairing was a no-brainer.

The Pairing

Packing for Mars by Mary Roach and 7 Moons Red Blend

7 Moons Red Blend is a combination of seven wines- Cabernet, Malbec, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Merlot, and Grenache. While that sounds (and is) very complex, the wine is incredibly smooth and easy to drink.

This smooth complexity is, likewise, found in Packing for Mars- each page is packed with interviews, dates, names, scientific terms, and acronyms, but the stories flow like a fictional page-turner. The book is also a combination of seven ingredients: humor, science, history, humanity, culture, and, of course, the childlike awe of space exploration. The seventh ingredient is investigative journalism, like where Roach debunks a certain myth regarding Enos the space chimp by ruthlessly reversing a game of in-print telephone until she uncovers the origins of the lies. This lady doesn't play.

While you’ll have to settle for enjoying this pair within the bounds of planet Earth, you can always dream that one day you’ll be sipping wine and flipping pages in a pod on Mars. (If you want to know more about alcohol consumption in space, grab the book!)

7 Moons has a quote on the cork. Bonus inspiration for your astronautical dreams.

There are a lot of space- and star-themed wines, so at first it was difficult to decide which paired best. In the end, though, pairings are not necessarily based on the name of a wine but rather the taste profile, so it really came down to this bottle.

I hope you find this pairing as stellar as I did!

Don't just read about being in space. Smell it and See it, too. Light up one of the space-scented candles and turn on your moon lamp to take a multi-sense journey.
