The Golden Compass & Tsarine Cuvee Adriana Champagne
Don't freak out, but, it's almost my birthday. It's not a big deal (that's a lie), I'm only turning 25 (also a lie). I have a very special pair picked out to mark the occasion (not a lie).
The Pairing
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman and Tsarine Cuvee Adriana Champagne
I can't remember when I first read the His Dark Materials trilogy, but I can tell you I was only a little older than Lyra, so I spent the entire adventure pretending it really could be me. Now, whenever I reread the books, I no longer think of myself as the young heroine, but instead have new perspectives each time. You could say that I've grown to appreciate the deeper nuances of this tale.
As has been my journey with wine. Even this year, as I truly take time to study the taste and texture and body of the wines in my pairings, I have gained new insights into not only the world of oenology, but my own preferences as well. Before January 1, 2018, I could never have imagined myself thinking, I really prefer a Viognier over Pinot Grigio, but obviously in the right mood I'll always go for a Chardonnay, because I didn't have the capability of thinking beyond, I like the white wines and the red wines.
And so, it's only fitting that such a wonderful bottle of champagne should enter my life when I'm actually ready to appreciate it for more than it's shiny bottle (although come on how cool is this bottle??). This champagne is sharp, and juicy, and oaky, and demands your attention- so much so that I could hardly read anything because I drank this champagne with my eyes closed.
Ok, now here is possibly my biggest pairing stretch of the PageFiftyNine chronicles: at the heart of both this book and this wine is the same element... a golden truthteller (the golden compass and golden wine, drinking tends to make the truth come out, you see?).
FINE. That reason is terrible! The truth is these go well together because I LOVE THEM. That's it. And it's my birthday, so I think that's enough. If I'm going to read my favorite book, then I'm doing it with fancy, delicious, adventurous wine in my glass. And, yes, you got me- they pair because they're both very very SHINY.
Coincidentally, this champagne would also pair beautifully with my fiance's favorite book, War and Peace, seeing as how Tsarine Champagne was created in tribute to the era of French influence on Russia, hence the Russian-architecture-like bottle. We can share very special nights with this very special wine while reading our very special novels. (Which I'm sure we'll do as soon as we can escape from reality for a bit.)
One day, perhaps, I will decide to pair The Golden Compass with a more functional wine, but it is not that day. Because today is the day that is almost my birthday.

Same bottle of wine, but picture was taken in artificial light rather than sunlight. Isn't the difference stunning? |
