Lamb & Seven Deadly Zins
My birthday is over and my summer is over- all in the same week. I need strong wine and hilarious literature.
The Pairing
Lamb: A Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore and Michael David Winery 7 Deadly Old Vine Zin
If you're unfamiliar with Lamb, here's the breakdown: it covers the years that the Bible skips; around 6 to 30 or so. So, it is based on the Bible and contains familiar names and places, but is not intended to be more than a very entertaining work of fiction. It's incredibly funny- like really great jokes on every page funny.
If you're unfamiliar with the real seven deadly sins, here's the other breakdown: they are not in the Bible either. Sure, "sin" is, but the actual seven? A handful of guys made those up, the last one spreading in the 600s to keep all those crazy European Catholics in line. And then a handful of guys (well, a very small handful- Michael and David Phillips) took the name and made a wine pun out of it and bottled up some delicious Zinfandel.
And so I give you this pair: united by the same core theme, but taking off in their own direction.
Further, Zinfandels are sisters of this same story. The Zinfandel grapes have been traced back to Croatia and Italy, but they are now mostly grown and bottled in California. So, like Lamb and the seven deadly sins, they have a very old origin, but were taken by some men and turned into something new, different, and really awesome.
This Zinfandel is of the higher alcohol content, jammier variety. The wine is described thus: "Complex aromas of tart cherry, raspberry and caramel are wrapped in flavors of chocolate cake, vanilla oak spice, and plenty of wood smoke." However, both my fiance and I smelled and tasted it and agreed there is a strong plum and or dried fig element. You can decide for yourself who knows more about this wine.
I can't recommend this pairing enough. Some books are undoubtedly personal taste-specific (either you like non-fiction accounts of the creation of Templeton Rye or you don't, sure), but if you don't like Lamb, then I think perhaps you are not a real human. If Zins aren't your thing, fine, but at 15% ABV this one can become your thing if you just give it, oh, three or four glasses.
Enjoy!

These. Are. AWESOME. Some fellow by the name of Kacper Hamilton designed wine glasses that represent each of the seven deadly sins. Pictured here are Wrath, Pride, and Gluttony.
