The Light Between Oceans & Miles from Nowhere Chardonnay

Next weekend I'll be heading to the mountains with friends and hope to do a mountain-themed post there, so I figured this week I would do something oceanic instead.

I love this book. M. L. Stedman is a genius at creating characters that you become 100% invested in, so that when two of them are in conflict you truly cannot pick sides. It's so good. You know what else I love? Chardonnay. I'm also 100% invested in this buttery wine. Luckily, I had just discovered a new bottle of chard, so this pairing came together in a flash.

(Like the flash of a lighthouse light? Haha?... Maybe not?... Work with me here.)

The Pairing

The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman and Miles From Nowhere Chardonnay

Of course, the first connection between these two is Australia- the book is set there and the wine is made there.

I considered going with one of the 19 Crimes wines that come out of Australia since this novel revolves around a (safe to say?) crime, but it didn't quite fit. The crimes that those wines are named after are the ones that carried sentences of exile to Australia... not at all the same vibe as this heart-achy story of love and loss.

Then, while perusing the Australian wines, I noticed this chardonnay. "Miles from Nowhere" is the perfect sentiment to go with this tale, where love and loss is threaded through with a theme of isolation.

This chardonnay is rich- it coats your mouth with each sip. It's also a little zesty, which I think pairs nicely with the fanatic urgency of Isabel. There is the tiniest hint of mineral or salt to the wine, calling back to the ocean and the saltiness of tears.

At the same time, I found this to be relatively light for a chardonnay, which is why it's so perfect. Light is a major element of this story- from the more obvious scenes regarding the lighthouse, to more subtle nods when M. L. Stedman describes a smile, or hair, or the feeling of happiness. This nearly-translucent wine is a sweet accompaniment to her words.

I won't lie- I sobbed reading the end of this book (and I do not often cry when reading). It's crazy, but I still tear up just glancing at excerpts. For this particular novel, you need a sturdy wine to hold, which I think you'll find in this chardonnay.

And, in the end, when you close this book with a sigh, the bottle even comes with a subtle little reminder that we shouldn't focus on where we aren't, but where we are. You are here.
