A Brief History of Time & Cruze Alta Cabernet Saugivnon
I have the house to myself this weekend! The fiance is away, so it's just me, the cats, and my books. And my wine. And my DVRed shows. And my vegetable garden seedlings. And my to-do list from last spring. How is it possible that I'm busier when he's gone?
Anyways, the quiet house makes for the perfect setting to dive into some reading/sipping and ignore all other plans. A casual topic this week: the science of the universe.
The Pairing
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking and Cruze Alta Cabernet Sauvignon
I would not normally soapbox about any particular novel, believing the enjoyment of reading is way too subjective to force anything upon others. That being said, if you don't own a copy of A Brief History of Time, get one right now. There is so much out there that is beyond our comprehension or control that it can be incredibly satisfying to get a few answers about the laws the govern the world around us.
And, I'm telling you, the more you drink the more you'll understand this book. A few glasses in and you'll read "We don't yet have a complete and consistent theory that combines quantum mechanics and gravity" (Page 138 of A Brief History of Time), and you'll think to yourself Right on, right on. I got your back, Steve. I'll figure this one out. And then you'll jot down on a napkin "Quantum Mechanics +Grabity Gravity = ??" and be brilliant and accomplished.
So, if you're hoping to feel great about not checking anything off of your list this weekend, grab this pair and hit the couch.
Enjoy!

I am in love with the straightforwardness of these wines, particularly this Cab. It's no-nonsense. Just the information you're really looking for: what is in this bottle and what does it taste like. I like to think Stephen Hawking would also approve of this style. Of course, it's what's inside the bottle that really counts.
This particular Cabernet Sauvignon is just... easy. It's light, low on alcohol, and finishes smoothly. The tannins that normally make a complex red wine give you that "grippy" feeling on your tongue are there are first, but quickly disappear, making this one of the more refreshing red wines I've had in awhile. The easiness of this wine serves as a nice complement to the density of Hawking's book (even though it's incredibly well-written, it's still a discussion of black holes and space-time and elementary particles and such).
