Treasure Island & Stonefield Cellars Dread Pirate Robert's Bloody Red Wine
At first glance, I thought this wine could be another pairing for The Princess Bride, but then a new idea came to mind. I'm a sucker for classics, so I'm always searching for their grapey counterparts.
The Pairing
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and Stonefield Cellars Dread Pirate Robert's Bloody Red Wine
You know what else I'm a sucker for? Local, family-run wineries. Stonefield has only been around for a decade or so, but I love what they're making! This red is punchy, smooth, and (in the words of Stonefield) "splendiforous." It's perfect for the page-turning tale of Jim Hawkins and his adventures on the high seas.
Some classics seem destined for academic joy only, but not this one. It reads like a Clive Cussler novel (ok, perhaps a wordy Clive Cussler novel). You can easily disappear into Stevenson's tale- it's one I imagine reading to my kids someday. Until then, however, I'll disappear with a glass of wine instead.

This lovely edition is available at Barnes and Noble as a new classics series. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the whimsical cover, but now I love it! I bought a few others, in fact... perhaps they'll make their own appearances later this year.
For the pairing itself- not only does the inspiration come from the pirate connection, but from the structures within the book/bottle. When I think of adventures, of tales you tell by the fire at night, I want a spicy red to go with it. I found that in this red wine from Stonefield Cellars. I like to think that a wine just like this would be served at the Admiral Benbow Inn, where Jim Hawkins once again regales the bar with the story of Long John Silver and Captain Flint and the accursed pieces of eight.
Whether your love of adventure takes you to oceans full of pirates or not, you'll do well for yourself by stopping through Stonefield Cellars to stock up.
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of [Dread Pirate Robert's Bloody Red Wine]!
