The Lady of the Rivers & Chateau Souverain Sauvignon Blanc

Yeah, I missed the boat on a Memorial Day theme. With these pairings I am truly in the moment, not checking ahead in the calendar to see if I can do something special or relevant. I will try to be more purposeful in the future, but for now my sole purpose still remains to try to find a thoughtful relationship between a beloved novel and a delicious wine.

And so, from my own little bubble:

The Pairing

The Lady of the Rivers by Philippa Gregory and Chateau Souverain Sauvignon Blanc

I must confess that I have not read any of the other Philippa Gregory's novels, but after reading this one, they are all on my list. She truly brings her characters to life, but not in a cheesy or overt way (I can't do the one-dimensional cute and clumsy woman, or the simple dark and tortured and jealous man... sorry E.L. James). But in The Lady of the Rivers there is a collection of complex characters that you come to love. For her juicy storytelling, I needed a juicy wine.

This Sauvignon Blanc (the first of PageFiftyNine, how is that possible??) is just what I was looking for. While part of the novel takes place in France, it also has many locations in England and features Luxembourg and even Scotland, so I think the fact that it is not from any of those countries is just as well. When in doubt, I go to California.

There is one consistent thread throughout the book, even as locations and characters change: sovereignty (or the challenge of someone else's sovereignty). A perfect fit for my little Californian Souverain.

The wine is herby and strong, but in a nice crisp way. I let it cool in the coldest compartment of my wine fridge, finding it adds a sweet and refreshing element.

I cannot wait to read more of Gregory's books and try more Souverain wine- my instinct tells me there are more pairings to be found there!

Happy Memorial Day- this unrelated pairing is for all the veterans out there!

We get to spend some time with Joan of Arc in The Lady of the Rivers, so bring her to life with this Joan of Arc candle... which is hand-crafted using an old wine bottle.
